The Winking Prawn charity dinner for the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline’s new project

“There are no 'other people’s children' in this world"

The Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline has been supporting Chernobyl children and their families in Belarus and the Ukraine for 25 years and counting, while our own Totnes and South Hams link, has been working tirelessly for more than 10 years. As the charity looks to extend their work and do more for the community affected by the 1986 nuclear disaster, the Winking Prawn has teamed up with them to help raise funds with a supper this February, and you’re invited. Here’s what we’re doing and why we’re doing it…

What the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline does

To recap, The Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Totnes and South Hams provides much needed respite and medical attention to children who continue to be devastatingly affected by the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. They do this by inviting children to come to the South Hams for a month each year for a holiday, healthcare appointments and time which, crucially, allows the radiation to clear out their bodies.

While the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline is a nationwide charity, it’s important to remember that each local link runs independently, so all funds raised for and by the Totnes and South Hams link go towards the work that they do directly. Equally, the Totnes and South Hams link runs entirely on the support of volunteers, so all money raised goes into supporting the children and their families.

To Belarus with Love

This year, link founder, Sue Wyeth, and her team want to extend their work on a project we’re calling To Belarus with Love. It will raise funds to renovate a home in the town of Stolin in Belarus. The home provides a place of safety for children who have been removed from their homes because they are being abused, are in need or are in danger. While there is an existing building, it is in desperate need of attention, currently in a neglected state and with little by way of comfort, toys and general warmth.

In March this year, Jane from the Winking Prawn will be joining Sue on a trip to Belarus to see the home and meet the children who are there, in order to help get the renovation underway. In advance of her trip, on 24th February we would like to invite you to join us for a fundraising dinner at the Winking Prawn. During the dinner, Sue will explain a little more about the work that the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Totnes and South Hams does, and you can enjoy a two course meal for £20, all of which will go towards the To Belarus with Love project.
