Meet the team: Jordan and Kelly

Working at The Winking Prawn isn’t just about the pink hoodies… it’s about the freshly baked cookies and being part of the family… here’s what Jordan and Kelly have to say about it…

What do you do at The Winking Prawn?

Jordan: we work mainly at the Winking Prawn, but sometimes at Sailor V or Island Street.  I have been here for nearly five years, since sixth form.  It was my first ever job - I came in on the recommendation of friends to see if there was any work available and it all went from there!

Kelly: I have been there for five summers but not all in a row.  I went to uni for three years to do dance at Nottingham Trent, and I am not originally from Salcombe but I came back here in May and I am feeling very settled with lots of friends here.

What does your average day involve?

Both: Coffees! Lots of coffees! It’s a very customer based job and you get to know people, particularly the locals well, so you get to know peoples’ coffee orders before they even sit down, which is really nice.

What did you do before joining the Winking Prawn?

Kelly: I was at uni before coming back here

Jordan: I went to sixth form and worked at the same time and Mark and Jane were great about fitting it in around school.  It’s one of the best things about working here - they will really help you with shift patterns.  I went off to do a course in hair and make up and they were really supportive - now if I have an opportunity to do hair and make up for a wedding or something, they understand.

What’s the best thing about working here?

Both: Freshly made cookies in the morning!… The flexibility of the team,  Jane and Mark as a pair are great - it’s more like a family.

Jordan: Some people go to work and it’s boring, but at WP it’s more like family - everyone knows everyone and it’s more personal than just colleagues.  Mark and Jane are very good at teaching you what to do, and they always want to boost your confidence and make you feel good about yourself.

Kelly: I don’t have family in Salcombe, and Mark and Jane have made me feel so welcome.  For your birthday and Christmas they always go out of their way to make sure that you have something from the local shops as well.  They have so much to do but they always remember those things.  It was my 26th birthday last year and I got a personalised Will Bees make-up bag.

What’s your favourite thing on the menu?

Jordan: Popcorn shrimp!  Before working there I didn’t really eat seafood but I love it now!

Kelly: Definitely the king prawns and mussels.

What do you like about working in Salcombe?

Jordan: The scenery.  Before I could drive I got the bus to work and it took about 20 minutes and I would always take lots of photos of the views.

Kelly: coming from a city to a town by the sea really opens your eyes to the scenery - you see more and enjoy it more.  It’s not hectic and rushed and after a shift in the summer you can go to the beach with family and friends and have a barbecue which is amazing.
